Of the three wild poliovirus strains, two have been certified globally eradicated — WPV2 in 2015 and WPV3, declared gone on World Polio Day 2019 — and the surviving type 1 clings on in just a couple of countries. Cases have collapsed from about 350,000 in 1988 to double digits in recent years. It is one of medicine's quietest near-miracles: most people never heard that it happened.
