The Ocean's Quiet Comeback: From Near-Zero to 8%+ Protected

8.12% of the ocean protected — 29M+ km² across 18,200 MPAs (May 2024)

The UN's SDG tracking counts 18,200 marine protected areas plus nearly 200 other effective conservation measures covering more than 29 million square kilometres, or 8.12% of the ocean, as of May 2024 — and protection has kept climbing toward the 10% milestone reported in 2026 coverage. Countries are now racing toward the 30%-by-2030 target agreed under the Global Biodiversity Framework. An area approaching the size of Africa has been placed under some form of legal protection within a single generation.

8.12%: share of the global ocean covered by marine protected areas and other conservation measures as of May 2024 — over 29 million square kilometres, up from almost nothing before 2000.
